About the Project

A high-altitude expedition tracker application designed for mountaineering teams and outdoor enthusiasts. The platform provides real-time route tracing, weather integration, and topographic 3D maps of Mt. Everest. It serves as an interactive scrollytelling tool and safety tracker for teams navigating the Himalayas.

The Challenge

Rendering detailed 3D topographic models of the Everest region alongside live weather vector wind arrows in real-time caused severe memory bottlenecks. The WebGL rendering loop struggled to update wind particle coordinate buffers without blocking the main browser thread, causing layout lag during scroll events.

The Solution

I optimized the terrain rendering by splitting the mountain mesh into dynamic Level of Detail (LOD) segments, loading high-res textures only for regions near the active camera. I offloaded wind vector math to Web Workers, calculating wind coordinate shifts on a separate thread and feeding results back to a WebGL instanced mesh renderer, keeping the UI fully responsive.
